What is optical character recognition used for?

OCR stands for Optical Character Recognition and refers to software designed for the translation of printed or handwritten text contained within an image, scanned document or PDF into searchable and editable text on a computer. The technology is usually applied by companies in order to simplify the process of manual data entry and increase the efficiency of managing large quantities of documents. Examples of the application of this technology include the use of invoices, forms, receipts, contracts, IDs and archives.
